Statistics – Elderly and Disabled
USA
US figures show 59.6 million people over the age of 55 (2002) and 35.9 million of those were over the age of 65 (2003). This represents 12% of the population. By 2030, the over 65 age group will represent approximately 20% of the population.
Approximately 54 million Americans age five or older have at least one disability (20% of total population). For more than a third of the individuals with disabilities, assistive technology is essential for them to be able to take care of themselves at home. About 21.2 million of this group has a disability that limits their ability to engage in basic physical activities such as walking, climbing stairs, reaching, lifting or carrying.
Canada
Canadian figures show 4.3 million people over the age of 65 (2006). This represents 13.7% of the population. By 2031 the over 65 age group will represent approximately 25% of the population.
Approximately 4.2 million Canadians over the age of 15 have some type of disability (16.6% of total population). Of those, over 60% need specialized aids to help with daily activities. More than 90,000 children between the ages of 5 and 14 need special aids for daily activities.
Falls are the number one cause for non-fatal hospital emergency room treatments and our products were designed to help to prevent some of these from happening.
The majority of disabled say that cost is to blame for their unmet specialized needs. Surveys also show that a significant number of people have no idea where to find the specialized aids they need.
Our products address this need better than any other alternative. Part of our objective is to educate and convey our product capabilities to these people.
